Hot Jewelry Trends For 2009

If you are one of those fashion conscious people who wants to be ahead on the new up and coming fashion looks, spring 2009 is holding a treat in colors and textures. The jewelry you choose will make a good style great. Whether style you choose to use, you are sure to be excited about all the options these new colors will give you.

What colors are going to be the rage this spring? It's predicted that fuschia, salmon and greens -as well as yellows in various shades as well as the soft lavender look will be popular when the sun starts warming the ground. How do you use jewelry to make these colors pop?

Jewelry in 2009 will be statement jewelry. This can be a piece that works from wonderful to wacky, but geometric shapes and exotic, rich colors with prominent stones/gems are the look on the runway.

How do you do this with your clothing? Last year, clothing was toned down to accommodate the jewelry. This year, wear both bold clothing and jewelry to give a memorable statement.

The coral and yellow colors give a warm palette offering. By using India as your inspiration, you can take beaded and etched metal to give a directional look to your clothes. The materials of choice for this are beads, mixed color threads, and worn "finished" metal.

Fashion jewelry is also offering chandelier earrings as a popular choice this year. This soft look will give a feminine touch to anything you wear. Combine this with any look for a sure hit. You can do this with an accent color, or use one of the bold new colors in your earring choice.

The new spring colors offer a great option for ring choices, as well. Wear a multi-colored stone ring to add bling to your outfit and versatility in clothing choices. This bold ring will please the eye and the pocketbook, since you will get such extensive use out of it.

This spring offers a great list of jewelry choices for you. Start looking now to find those perfect pieces. We all know that an outfit can be good, but it's the accessories that make it great. Be bold in your statements and pick some great pieces.

Winter 2008 and Spring 2009 Jewelry Trends

A lot of jewelry makers and artists don't think about trying to follow fashion trends and their sales end up suffering for it. Even if you already have a backlog of jewelry inventory I've found that you can sometimes introduce little changes that will make those older jewelry pieces have much more appeal to a wider audience.

Make the 2008 Winter and 2009 Spring season the time you turn your jewelry making style a little more fashionable and see your sales increase!

Warm and Dark:
There are lots of different predictors of color pallette trends for the winter, but all you really need to know is dark and warm. This means that dark reds, oranges and even some darker yellow colors are all very popular.

I've seen a lot of people wearing dark red gems and stones a lot, usually with a darker color or patina coated metal as well. Don't forget colors like brown, black and even muddied greys can be dark and warm.

Formal Wear:
The winter holidays bring a number of dances and parties and gatherings of all sorts, some formal and some informal. For formal events diamonds never go out of style, but instead of being draped in many different jewelry pieces and accessories expect to see people wearing one or two unique and large pieces. If you are making jewelry for formal events you may want to consider making an eye-catching pendant, cocktail ring and earring combination all using over-sized semi-precious stones or gems. As always, pearls and diamonds are always great for formal events, but fake pearls and large costume jewelry pieces can be popular and add sparkle just like anything else!

Gold vs Silver:
Silver's cool feel always makes it a hit in the winter months with the way is goes so well with the silvery shimmer of snow, but gold is making a comeback, especially with those warmer colors and bigger stones we're seeing.

These are just some of the many new and exciting jewelry fashions that hot for the upcoming cold months. If you're making your own jewelry then you'll definitely want to pay attention to these trends and keep them in mind as you make your own pieces, either for sale or for wearing on your own!

You can read the expanded article and learn a whole lot more about what to expect with 2008/2009 new jewelry trends and read over 140 more articles about making and selling your own handmade jewelry at http://www.BeadJewelryBlog.com

Pearls in Freshwater

Pearls are known all over the world for its lustrous appeal and women have been wearing them for many years. Before the 19th Century, deep sea was the only source to get natural pearls with the help of sea-divers. But then came the era of cultured pearls. The advent of pearl farming is often credited to Mikomoto of Japan who had perfected the technique of culturing pearls.

There are many types of pearls such as freshwater pearls, akoya seawater pearls, Tahitian pearls and south seawater pearls. Each one of these pearls comes from different oysters type.

Freshwater pearls are the only pearls that are harvested in rivers, ponds and lakes and all other types come from deep-sea water pearl farming. No matter what the source is, they are all cultural pearls and natural pearls are rarity now.

Pearls are actually formed when a small tiny object becomes trapped inside the tissue of oyster or mollusk or surgically implanted by human. What happens then is that the tissue secretes nacre, which is a combination of crystalline and other organic substances, building up layer upon layer which finally takes the shape of pearl. This is an amazing process that takes two to three years or more but the end result is just beautiful.

The quality of any pearl freshwater always depends upon the weather conditions and the water quality in rivers or lakes. Often the pearl farmers keep checking the growth process in order to get the best products.

The size, color, roundness and the luster are the key factors to determine the prices of these pearls no matter, which cultured pearl type and the source. Most online sites or brick and mortar jewelry boutiques have direct procurement from the pearl farms and often sell at discounted prices to the consumers. Freshwater pearls have become much affordable than ever before.

Freshwater Pearl & Freshwater Pearl Jewelry

When it comes to Pearls the most common questions I have received over the past several years as a freshwater pearl jewelry manufacturer and dealer would have to be what are the difference between freshwater and cultured pearls and pearl jewelry? Simply put 99.999% of all pearl jewelry found in the world market of today is in fact cultured.

The only difference is that freshwater pearl jewelry are only a single type of cultured pearls. Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea Pearls are in fact all cultured pearls. The current trend of confusion for the general public seems that they are led to believe pearl jewelry such Japanese Akoyas, South Sea or even Tahitian Pearls are all natural pearls when in fact as their freshwater siblings they are in fact cultured pearls...A cultured pearl is a pearl that has been created with the help of human interaction at the very start of the process.

Human intervention is required to allow the process of pearl nacre formation to begin, the task requires surgical precision to be successful but from that point on nature take over.

The irony of all of this would be that high quality gem quality freshwater pearls are in fact all nacre which would be the closet type of pearl to a truly natural pearl that may have been found 500 years ago.... Did you know that all salwater pearls which include the Japanese Akoya's, Australian South Sea's and Tahitian Pearls are nearly all started with a round plastic bead that is inserted the mollusk and pearl nacre starts to form around it ?

So the choice is yours a round plastic bead with pearl nacre coated around it or a gem quality all nacre freshwater pearl just like were being created millions of years ago.. the choice is yours but I know where I would spend my money.

Quality Freshwater Pearl Jewelry has been a passion of Pearlsintime.com, as direct importers we know pearls and love to give people the correct and accurate information about what we love.

Jewelry is the Perfect Gift For Your Teenager

All girls, of all ages, love jewelry of some kind. Some may be more interested in bracelets, or earrings, or necklaces, but none the less they all love some piece of jewelry. As they get older and grow into young women, they get harder to shop for, but never fear, here are some ideas to help you when shopping for your teen! Hearts, charms, lockets, some personalized and some not.

So if your teenager is more interested in stunning bracelets, why not give her a Personalized Heart Charm Toggle Bracelet? The first letter of her name is engraved for into the diamond cut heart and the open lined chains make it light looking. Another great idea is a Swarovski Crystal Silver Heart Charm Bracelet.

Once again, a single letter can be engraved into the heart charm, which is towards the clip of the bracelet, for no additional charge. The bracelet is decorated with dazzling Swarovski crystals of multiple colors. This would be a perfect "Mom & Daughter" bracelet, because any mom would love this too!

If your teen is into more bulky bracelets, then a wide cuff personalized bracelets would be the perfect choice. They can hold her name, initials, or nickname and are sterling silver.

Necklaces are so fun to pick from - personalized or not. They're just stunning and can make your neck seem longer and slimmer than it is. A great surprise for your teenager would be to buy her a Crystal and Pearl Personalized Circle Charm Friendship Necklaces for her and her best friends.

Each young lady could get their first initial on the circle charm and different colored crystals on the necklace. For something just for her, though, the Heart Locket Pendant on White Pearl Necklace is a beautiful gift to share with her. The locket opens up and can hold inside a picture of you and a picture of her. Yes, your teen will most definitely treasure this touching gift from you.

Another cute idea is to give a Rhinestone Key to My Heart Charm Necklace. This unique necklace has two chains connected at the clasp, an shimmering rhinestone key pendant and is very chic and can be worn with any outfit she selects.

So shopping for your teenage daughter isn't so hard if you know what you're looking for. The more personal the better but all pieces of jewelry are beautiful and that even without it being personalized it'd be treasured forever - because it was given by you.

Jewelry in Other Cultures

In Britain today it is typical to associate jewelry with special occasions such as weddings, gifts given to a person of importance, or as a symbol of belonging such as a cross worn around the neck. In other cultures however jewellery can be used in different ways and types of gems and stones can be regarded quite differently.

Historically, the first culture to make jewelry were the Chinese around 5000 years ago. Silver was more popular than gold and Jade was their favourite stone. The Chinese initially wore jewelry in order to display their wealth but later early tiara type pieces were worn by women to add to their beauty.

At the same time in Central and South America gold was much easier to find. Jewelry from this area was incredibly ornate however and included the combined use of gold with mother of pearl and amethyst inlayed. The Mayan civilization also used precious gems as a form of currency, whilst the Aztecs used jewelry and jewel-covered tools such as daggers during sacrifices.

Similar to the cross as worn by Christians, other religions have their popular symbols that are widely seen on necklaces and as pendants. Many Muslims wear the symbol of Allah and designs sometimes feature a ritual sword. Additionally, Judaism also has its typical designs such as the Star of David and the Hamesh Hand, a symbol that is traditionally believed to offer protection.

Body modification in some cultures uses jewelry. Inhabitants of Myanmar wear rings from an early age that stretch the neck over a long period of time. Whereas in the African tribes of the Mursi Lip plates are worn to stretch the bottom lip which is traditional before marriage.

Jewelry of the modern era takes on many forms. In the 20th Century artists and designers have used the medium in order to convey their ideas, whilst even pop culture movements such as Hip-Hop have adopted 'Bling' as a symbol of success and musical prowess.

Pearls and Pearl Jewelry

Pearls that were once the domain of rich, famous and affluent have now become available to all. Pearl has always been the most sought after gems because of its natural beauty and brilliant lustrous appeal.

Pearls were also treasured as a unique symbol of showing great opulence. British Royalties had exquisite amount of collections of rare beautiful pearls all the time. They were limited to be worn by worriers and rulers. Many European countries passed laws forbidding the wearing of pearls by others outside of the nobility. In Roman Empire pearls were considered ultimate symbol of wealth and prosperity.

It was only the wealthy people who enjoyed the privilege of possessing and wearing the precious pearl jewelry. During ancient times, pearls were considered signs of love, health and prosperity. Many believed that they are tears from the Heaven or Goddess that nurtures in oyster's womb.

Pearl hunting was done by few sea-divers extracting them by opening the oysters from sea floor or riverbeds but that was dangerous and risky. Because of unpredictable nature of oyster growth, the pearls found were varying in quality and limited supply. Kokichi Mikimoto of Japan who perfected and patented his bead nucleating process in early 20th Century which revolutionized the entire pearl cultivation.

Now millions of these cultured pearls are produced in Japan, China, Australia and other Far Eastern Asian regions of the world. You will find pearl farming in Central America seawater as well as in Mississippi River area.

The most commonly used and internationally recognized grading system by the pearl jewelry industry in general is A to AAA to determine the true pearl value. Strict adherence is often difficult when matching in a pearl strand. But this alphanumeric ranking alone does not have much of significance to a customer and often puzzling.

Lustrous quality, color, size and pearl type are the key factors when it comes to pricing.

Freshwater Or Saltwater Pearls

Everyone has questioned it at least once. What is the difference between the freshwater and saltwater pearls in my jewelry? Besides the obvious difference of where they are grown; either in freshwater streams or saltwater oceans, there is the difference in the pearls themselves, which actually, is very little. The main difference can be found in the production of man-made pearls.

In all pearls that are man-made, the pearls are produced by inserting a small particle into the oyster's body itself. In a saltwater pearl, the small particle that is inserted into the oyster is usually a very small piece of mother-of-pearl shell. It is implanted into the oyster along with a small piece of mantle tissue, or connective tissue, from another oyster. The saltwater oyster will only produce one pearl, but not without both elements; the mantle and shell portion, being inserted.

For a freshwater pearl, there is no need to insert the small piece of mother-of-pearl shell. All that the freshwater pearl needs to be produced, is a small piece of mantle from another oyster. Then, the freshwater oyster starts to put layer after layer of nacre over it to produce a pearl.

The great thing about freshwater oysters or mullusks, is that multiple pieces of mantle can be placed inside an oyster to form multiple pearls! This is primarily the reason why freshwater pearls are lower in price than saltwater pearls.

Either way, they both look great worn as a bracelet, necklace, or earrings!

Selecting Pearl Necklaces

Pearl necklaces are in high demand due to the quality of them and the way they look. This isn't the type of jewelry that is going to lose its appeal a short time after you purchase it. They never go out of style either so you can be confident you will always look great in them. Selecting the right pearl necklaces to add to your collection is important though. You want to be happy with them each time you go to put them on.

There are quite a few different lengths to choose from with pearl necklaces. If you want to accent the length of your neck then go with one that is longer. If you feel you have a long neck though and want to minimize it go with pearl necklaces that are closer to your neck.

Collar pearl necklaces are generally from 10 to 13 inches in length. They are often worn for going out at night but some women like to wear them during the day as well. They often have several strands on top of each other for a very nice overall appearance. If you don't like something that close to your neck a choker may be a better option. These are looser even though they are still close to the neck. Generally the length is from 16 to 18 inches.

The most common length of pearl necklace is known as the princess. This is from 17 to 20 inches in length. They work well for a casual night out but one where you want to look nice. They also work great for any formal occasion. The longest pearl necklaces are the opera with a length of 28 to 34 inches. It is customary for them to reach below the bust line.

Having several different necklace pearl items around can allow you to change your look. Don't underestimate how the size of the pearls as well as the length of a pearl necklace can do so. You can feel great about how you look when you wear a pearl necklace because they are a good match for any occasion. They are also a universal type of item that a person can wear no matter how old they are.

Pearl Bracelets

Pearl bracelets aren't as common as necklaces and earrings but they are lovely accessories just the same. There is no shortage of terrific designs for them either. For example some of them resemble double or triple stands of pearls. Others feature small pearls dangling from a silver or gold band.

A bracelet pearl set along with some earrings and a necklace really completes an overall look. If that seems too much for you to display then you can certainly wear one alone.

You get to decide how you want a pearl bracelet to fit as well. Some people like them to be snug against their wrist. Other people like them to be loose enough that they move freely but not enough that they are going to fall off. You also get to choose the size of the pearls with these types of bracelets.

Pearl bracelets with large pearls are generally worn by older women. Those with very small and delicate pearls are often worn by young girls. Yet there is no right or wrong with this so you can wear any type of pearl bracelet that you find appealing to you. They come in all types of colors too. You can get a bracelet pearl look for a low price with some of them as well.

You definitely want to invest in a pearl bracelet though that is well made. That way it will hold up to all you do in a typical day. You also want the pearls to remain lustrous when you display them. Take a look around at the various jewelry stores out there. You will be sure to find many pearl bracelets that fit your tastes. Make sure you ask to try them on too so that you can be confident they fit very well.

Pearl jewelry is quite universal because you can wear it for any occasion. It works for a fun night out, going to the theatre, and even when you are getting married. The fact that pearl jewelry looks great on youthful young ladies as well as older women means that anyone can really appreciate them.

Pearls come in many different sizes so you can get the look you want. Some people are happy with the miniature versions. A string of them is wonderful around the neck. Others like the larger sized ones that are usually worn closer to the neck such as with a choker style.

Pearls are often assumed to be white but they come in other colors as well. They include off white, light pink, and even black.

A pearl is a very delicate item that comes from the water. Some pearls derive in freshwater while the best looking ones are found in saltwater. You will pay more for rare pearls but they are definitely worth the cost. Pearl jewelry holds up very well to time and the elements so you won't have to replace your items often.

There are many different types of jewelry pearl related to choose from. I have already mentioned that the necklaces accent any outfit you wear. They can be long strands or short depending on the look you want. A single strand of pearls is elegant but you can give it new flare by going with a double strand.

There are also pearl bracelets and earrings you can purchase as well. Many women love to have a complete set so they can wear such pieces together. There are often great deals on pearl jewelry out there too so take advantage of them. They can offer you the perfect opportunity to get the items you want at a price that you can fit into your budget.

Summer Fashion Jewelry Deep and Warm is the Trend

Summer's barely here, and the trend setters in the fashion industry are already making forecasts for Fall, 2008. Smooth, rounded shapes pair with matte metallics in the coming season.

Personal style takes a warm, rich turn as the holiday season approaches. So before you even retire your favorite summer swimsuit, trendsetters are already talking about softer stylings, coupled with mixed materials and deep, rich colors. Here are 5 of the hottest trend ideas complete with coloring advice), straight from the leading edge of fashion jewelry:

Rounded shaped like discs, rings, and hoops. Like a 3-ring circus, many of Fall's hottest designs are taking a circular shape. Look for designed inspired by retro looks of the 1960's: think British Invasion, West End geometrics. Medallions - the bigger the better - are also a popular look, reminiscent of the love-fest 70's.

For warmer tones: Try rich oranges and warm reds like Carnelian, Cinnabar, and Red Aventurine. Olive makes a great secondary color to mix things up. For cooler tones: watery, icy pastels in pink and blue set a relaxed but classy tone, while deep royal purples combined with matte gray add a touch of higher class.

Mix it up: Layers, textures and materials are all being interchanged this season. Silk cords with textured metals, suede with wood or metallics. Go Natural: Wood, shell, natural stones are all hot commodities this Fall. The "go green" concept has hit the jewelry world with full force, and mother of pearl (dyed in a rainbow of colors), abalone and freshwater pearls are making a big "splash", as well as turquoise, agate and jade (also in a rainbow of colors).

Bold or Understated, the choice is yours: Big, bold dramatic pieces as a fashion focal point are the statement of the season. The peasant styles of the 70's, as well as the dynamic, two-toned geometrics of the 60's are playing nicely this Fall. Black and White (or silver and black) are hot properties. For the understated look, consider smaller crystals with lightweight metallics, pewter or graphite toned, for a great daytime/office look.

Fashion jewelry this fall is full of possibilities for once in a long time. It can be almost anything that you make of it. These 5 tips are a great starting point to put your jewelry wardrobe in high style. With layering continuing to be a trend, consider coupling a few more understated necklaces at various lengths with one larger, "chunky" bracelet, to create a wardrobe worth talking about all season long.

Freshwater Pearl Jewelry a Great Gift Ideas

Pearl jewelry has made beautiful presents for centuries and it is only in the last 50 years that they have become more accessible for most of us. Pearls have and always will capture the attention and love of women. For this very reason pearl jewelry makes great presents. So you still need more reasons for getting all those bonus points for giving some stunning pearl jewelry, here they are:

1. Pearl earrings and necklaces make ideal gifts because they are timeless in their elegance. My sister gave me a pair of freshwater pearl stud earrings when I was a teenager and I still have them and wear them. They are a simple and timeless style and always make me think of her when I wear them.

2. Pearl jewelry can be worn for most any occasion from formal to work to casual.

3. The variety of styles now available in pearl jewelry lets each of us showcase our individual styles and taste.

4. Pearl jewelry is a beautiful symbol of love, fidelity and trust; one of the reasons it makes ideal wedding jewelry and anniversary presents.

5. You feel very special being given pearl jewelry; it is something your girlfriends go ooh ahh about, no matter who gives you the jewelry.

6. It is one of the most memorable presents because pearl jewelry is timeless and lasts for years. Women love having pieces that have passed through the family and the stories behind them.

7. Pearl jewelry makes ideal gifts to mark the progression through significant moments in life, ranging from moving from girlhood into womanhood, graduations, personal achievements, significant birthdays, weddings and anniversaries as well as special events.

Pearls earrings should always be set in silver or gold and you should only get the real thing -cultured freshwater or sea water pearls only. Pearl jewelry gifts should only be real pearls unless a specific faux pearl design is particularly requested.

The size of the genuine pearls does not matter. The pearls my sister gave me are small and I adore them because of who gave them to me for my 16th birthday. What matters is the giving of the pearls not how fancy they are because pearls range from the affordable to the blindingly expensive.

Selecting Designer Watches

From being a device for keeping time, watches have grown into fashion statements. You must have noticed watches of different styles, shapes and colors adorning the wrists of trendy women and fashion conscious gentlemen at parties and functions. Made from a variety of metals like gold, silver and titanium, these designer watches have become a means to show off wealth and sense of style. While women prefer smaller watches with thin chains and bands, men go for bigger and heavier ones.

The demand for designer watches is so great. Several manufacturers compete to grab the attention of the people. Watches made from precious metals and adorned with diamonds or other exquisite stones can rouse the envy of the onlooker and pride of the owner.

However, great care should be given while selecting a designed watch. For women, smaller ones are the best suited, while men should go for the bigger ones. You have to always remember that these watches are fashion statements and hence try to buy models which match your color and physique and gel well with your cloths and accessories to avoid a jarring and out of place look.

Please do not go by the looks alone. Check the working condition of the watch. Look for any flaws in design and finish. Being expensive, they can create heartburn when you suddenly find out a flaw after you have brought the otherwise exquisite piece. Always remember to ask for the manufacturer's guarantee. It is also highly advisable that you compare the products and prices of designer watches manufactured by different companies before jumping headlong.

If you are looking for more information then feel free to visit Patek Philippe Watches and Panerai watches.

The Beauty of Black Pearls

Pearls have always had their place in the world of fashion. They never go out of style and you can wear them with many different styles of clothing. However, there is one type of pearl that has only recently started to be well known in the world of fashion. That is the black pearl.

Wearing them is a great way to show you have style and to draw attention to your choice of fabulous accessories. Black pearls have a very modern look and that is part of their appeal. They can also be a symbol of wealth as black pearls are rare. Therefore jewelry that is made from them is going to come with a hefty price tag attached.

While shopping for items made from black pearls you will find there are many different shades offered. Some are a light gray and then they range all the way to a dark glossy black. The darker the color of them the more expensive they will be.

Even so, there is definitely a demand out there in society for black pearls Those that come from saltwater are going to hold their value longer. When you buy black pearls that come from freshwater sources they are likely to lose their shine as time goes by. Still, many people buy them because they are affordable. The shape of the pearls seems to be rounder when they come from freshwater sources as well.

Don't be surprised if you start to see more and more jewelry stores offering items made with black pearls This has become a very alluring type of style and one that many people are interested in. For many people who love pearls, it is simply a nice change from their usual white shades of them.

If you haven't taken an interest in black pearls yet you should see what is offered. You will be very impressed by the look of them. You will likely be enticed to make such a purchase for yourself or as a gift as well.

Pearl Care

Classic white pearls are a must fashion accessory for every woman's wardrobe. They are so versatile that they can be worn for any formal affair to create an elegant look , or worn casually with jeans and a simple blouse. They are complimented nicely with sterling silver or gold, and combine well with an assortment of other gemstones. In nature, you can find pearls in shades of pink, brown or black. And now you can purchase pearls in an assortment of colors and finishes. Metallic finishes are currently very popular. They give pearls a brilliant shine and an iridescent look.

How a Pearl is Formed

A pearl is produced as a mollusk secretes layers of nacre or mother-of-pearl around an irritant. If the irritant is a natural grit or sand that makes it's way into the mollusk, the pearl is a natural pearl and is rare and expensive. If the irritant is placed inside the mollusk by human intervention, it is considered a cultured pearl. Layers of nacre gradually build up over years and form a spherical, oblong, or irregular shaped pearl depending on the original shape of the irritant. The thicker the nacre, the more durable the pearl.

Tips for How to Clean Pearls

Pearls are delicate and brittle no matter how thick the nacre. With proper care they can last between 100-150 years. The best way to clean pearls is: to dust them off and wipe them with a damp cloth. Never clean them with harsh chemicals, including jewelry cleaners, or a sonic cleaner, take off your pearl jewelry when you apply make-up, perfume, or lotion on your hands if they do get dirty, they can be washed with a mild solution of soap and water.

The surface of a pearl can also scratch easily so how you store your pearls is important also. Try not to store them with other jewelry that may damage the surface.

American Freshwater Pearls

There are American Cultured pearls. Recently, the interest in culturing of pearls has grown worldwide. There are around 300 species of mussels, capable of producing pearls native to the US. Many natural gem quality pearls have been found in America, even before the creation of the US.

The US has a long standing shell fishing tradition. In the late 1800's a German immigrant started a mother of pearl button industry. To supply that industry, American shell fisherman collected mussels from the Mississippi River and its many tributaries.

Mother of pearl buttons became the standard and created a sizeable shell fishery. Natural Pearls, although, not the primary focus became a profitable sideline to the shell collector. Because of the industry affiliated with button manufacturing and the occasional find of a gem quality natural pearl American awareness of pearls grew.

A little known but large business has developed since the 1950's, when Japanese pearl farmers began to use beads, from the American mussel shells, for nucleating their cultured akoya pearls. This was a jumping off point for American freshwater cultured pearl production.

Not known for spherical pearls the freshwater pearl farms in the US. They produce different varieties and variations of mabe' or blister pearls. These begin when a technician glues a half round nucleus to the inside of the shell under the mantle tissue.

These blister pearls are different from the mabe' pearls grown elsewhere. After about 2 years, then the mussels are harvested and cleaned. The shell is cut around the blister, then polished and set in pendants, rings, brooches, and earrings.

Another method of pearl production in the US is the insertion of fancy nucleus. This way fancy shaped pearls are grown. These American freshwater pearls are white or gray, the white ones leaning to a rose tone and the gray ones to bluish. As in a lot of freshwater pearls, not just from the US, orient is a frequent feature. Orient is the highlights or overtones that looks like a rainbow.

China's Freshwater Pearls Farming History

Although it seems as though pearl culturing is a fairly new thing, and China's entry into perliculture is only 40 some odd years old. Actually the truth is that pearl culturing began in China as long ago as 700 years ago.

Records from that time describe the pearl blister techniques. A pearl blister or mabe' pearl is a pearl that is formed against the inside of the shell. The Chinese used to take a small cast lead Buddha, and place it inside the mussel's shell, and the mussel would coat the Buddhas with nacre.

Most of the time they would cut these little figures out and the jeweler would use the pearl coated figure in other jewelry. Sometimes the shells were sold whole without cutting them apart. These are still found today. The technique was to wedge open the mussel shell and slip the figure between the mantle and the shell. The farmers would care for them for 6 months or so and then harvest them.

Then the new age began sometime in the late 60's or early 70's. China burst onto the pearl market with literally tons of pearls, mostly the small wrinkled keshi pearls with the non-glamorous nickname of rice krispies or potato pearls named for their shape. However not all the pearls were inferior, 2 % of those tons were higher grades. Soon realizing that the better grades were the pace to put their energies, pearl farmers began to emulate the techniques of the now extinct pearl center of Lake Biwa, Japan.

Using similar techniques as the Japanese freshwater pearl farmers, they soon began culturing of the higher grades, shifting their attitudes about pearl farming; they oriented their production to quality and away from quantity. Now China is still improving the quality of freshwater pearls and their quality is rivaling the saltwater culturing of the akoya oyster.

Undoubtedly, with costs steadily increasing in Japan, if the quality continues to advance, China will lead the world in high grade pearl culture.

Freshwater Pearls - Uniquely Different

You probably already know that both freshwater and saltwater mollusks can produce pearls, and that saltwater mollusks that produce cultured pearls are called oysters (they look more like a scallop than the edible oyster), and the mollusks used to culture freshwater pearls are called mussels.

Probably the most significant difference, between culturing saltwater oysters and freshwater mussels, is that one freshwater mussel can accept up to 50 of the implants used to produce pearls and from those 50 implants, up to 40 pearls can successfully be harvested.

The smaller akoya oyster can accept up to five implants, and the larger Tahitian and South Sea pearls can accept only one implant per oyster. The akoya oyster can produce up to 5 pearls and Tahitian and South Sea of course can produce only one pearl from the single implant. The time until harvest for the freshwater pearl can be anywhere from 2 to 6 years. The period for the saltwater oyster to produce a pearl is only 6 months to 26 months.

Freshwater mussels are implanted with a piece of mantle tissue, the thin membrane lining the mollusks shell. But saltwater implants also include a bead made from the shell of a freshwater mussel. Implanting is different between the saltwater and freshwater mollusks in that the saltwater implant is done in the animals gonad, while the freshwater implantation is done in the mantle tissue next to the shell.

The pearls themselves are different, in the freshwater pearl the pearl is usually solid nacre, and the saltwater pearl it is usually only at most 3 mm, because of the bead implant.

The different techniques are the reason why freshwater pearls are rare if they are spherical, and of course the saltwater start with a round implant and the nacre is built up on that. About 2% of the freshwater pearl harvest is round, while up to 80% of the saltwater harvest is round.

Pearl Jewelry Forever

Pearl jewelry has probably been worn a lot longer than most of us might think. As far back as 2000 years ago, pearls were sometimes used as an offering for the emperor.

Pearls were considered to be one of the most valuable treasures in those days. Pearls were not only worn by royalty as accessories, but they were also used to decorate furniture and even to decorate the tombs of royal people.

At one time pearls may have been considered old fashion and mainly worn to represent dignity and wealth. That is no longer the case. Due to the development of production technology, pearls are available today in more colors, shapes and sizes, giving them more appeal to the mainstream consumer.

Even when diamonds and other kinds of colored gemstones are popular, pearls are never ignored by the consumer or the jewelry designers. Nowadays, pearls have become more popular not only because of the diversity in different shapes and sizes but also they are more affordable.

However, the price of a strand of pearls may vary considerably based on the type, length and quality of the pearls used in the necklace. One strand of pearls may cost $300, while another similar looking piece may cost only $40. Just like diamonds, there are many factors that contribute to the price of a pearl.

No longer limited to the pearl strands, jewelry designers can mix pearls with other stones, such as diamonds crystals, and other different colored-gemstones. Stones or metals can add more life to pearls and even give them a romantic flavor. Even a simple creation with just pearl and metal such as gold, platinum or silver can give jewelry designers numerous new ideas to make the piece of jewelry in many different stunning styles.

Pearl jewelry is so versatile it can be suitable for almost any occasion. For the office you can wear a simple chain with a pearl pendant. If you are attending a formal business banquet, you can wear a stylish bright black or gold pearl strand. A strand of multicolor pearls connected by sterling silver will compliment a pair of casual jeans. When visiting friends or eating out, a necklace of pearl with multiple stones, such as crystals, beads, or even corals is appropriate.

Almost anywhere in the world, when you step into a jewelry shop or open a jewelry magazine, there will always be some pearls to catch your eyes. Whether they are on a strand or combined with another type of jewelry.

Your Alternative BirthStone

Birth stones have been used for centuries to celebrate the month of a person's birth bringing luck, health and wealth! These "birthstones" are precious or semi-precious gemstones that are associated with particular months of the year. They are considered lucky for those who believe in such things and they present healing powers which are heightened during their associated months.

The modern list of birthstones contains the official birthstones from the American National Association of Jewelers. These gemstones were officially adopted in 1912. It must be noted however that there are different birthstones adopted by the Hindus and so why not change your birthstone to a Hindu one if you don't like the traditional stone associated with your birth month!

The list below includes both the modern and traditional birthstones with the Hindu birthstone added as an alternative:
January Birthstone Garnet or Rose Quartz Hindu birthstone: Ruby

February Birthstone Amethyst or Onyx Hindu birthstone: Topaz

March Birthstone Aquamarine or Bloodstone Hindu birthstone: Opal

April Birthstone Diamond or Rock Crystal Hindu birthstone: Diamond

May Birthstone Emerald or Chrysoprase Hindu birthstone: Emerald

June Birthstone Alexandrite or Moonstone or Pearl Hindu birthstone: Pearl

July Birthstone Ruby or Carnelion Hindu birthstone: Sapphire

August Birthstone Peridot or Sardonyx Hindu birthstone: Ruby

September Birthstone Sapphire or Lapis Hindu birthstone: Zircon

October Birthstone Opal or Tourmaline Hindu birthstone: Coral

November Birthstone Topaz or Citrine Hindu birthstone: Cats Eye

December Birthstone Tanzanite, Zircon or Turquoise Hindu birthstone: Topaz

Tanzanite became an official 'December' birthstone in October 2002, in the first revision of birthstones since 1912, and was added to the birthstone list maintained by the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA).

Be sure to see our next article entitled "Gemstone Therapy" where we provide detailed information on the mystical healing properties of certain gemstones.

Jewelry Necklace

All jewelry lovers from teens to celebrities always look for unique jewelry that defines their style, tastes and fashion.

Jewelry necklace comes in many varieties from costume jewelry to precious stones and metals and come in all price range. Some are good for casuals only while others are good for parties only but still some can be adorned all the times.

It is a common belief that diamond jewelry is the most expensive of all jewelry but other precious metals like gold and platinum are equally expensive. Besides gem stones the most preferred and admirable among most women is pearl necklaces.

Pearls are natural gem and are cultured in deep-sea waters as well as in ponds and rivers. Though Japan once dominated the market in cultured pearls but now China have overtaken them. Many Japanese own pearl farms in China and resell them as Japanese pearls.

Jewelry necklaces designed and quality pearls are very attractive and add charms and grace. Women look very elegant and sophisticated wearing them. They have been very popular among celebrities like Marilyn Monroe to Jackie Kennedy and we often see Hollywood stars and models displaying their luminous pearls with pride and love.

Pearls come in various varieties such as freshwater, akoya seawater, Tahitian and South Sea and each one is cultured in different environments and in different oyster types. As such their color, luster and size vary. Depending upon the size, type and quality jewelers around the world grade and set the prices accordingly.

Typically pearls are synonymous with white color but they come in various other colors from gray to pink, black and golden. Some are natural colors but others are color enhanced to meet fashion demands.

Jewelry necklace designed with akoya pearls are very much sought after, as the quality is superb and are very much affordable now.

Pearl Bracelet

Does the pearl bracelet suggest innocence? It reminds of a young woman or girl, without being suggestive or the slightest bit provocative. It is not the same for a pearl necklace, where the beauty of the necklace draws attention to her neck, and pardon me for saying, and her bust. And that is not to say that the necklace is anymore suggestive, but it is in a way. And if you take that same pearl bracelet, slightly larger of course, and wear it on the ankle, the "suggestiveness needle" goes off the chart for me.

A somewhat different aura comes across when the bracelet is part of a pearl jewelry set, which suggests a certain amount of wealth. And the pearl earring, really is a very feminine statement, just a plain stud earring to me is so beautiful. A pair of white pearl earrings is such a subtle statement of beauty, just understated elegance.

Back to the pearl bracelet, it is also a statement of beauty, but carries a lightness, it is not saying, "Look at me I am so conscious of my feminine beauty." It is more of an innocence saying, "Does this necklace look pretty." I guess I mean it is not "self-conscious".

Many women wear the bracelet without any other jewelry; it is fine by itself, or with matching earrings and necklace. Some pearl bracelets in genuine freshwater pearls come in peach, lavender, multicolor and black. There is also a double and triple strand version of the regular single strand.

Freshwater Pearls From Japan?

Believe it or not, until a short while ago, all freshwater pearls were called Biwa Pearls. Lake Biwa is the name of a very large and ancient lake that is fed by over 500 rivers. Lake Biwa had been used to culture freshwater pearls, from around 1914, until the 1980's saw the decline of pearl culture due to pollution from housing and resort encroachment, industrial and roadside run-off.

Pearl production peaked at around 6 tons annually. And as history repeats itself so many times pollution and over harvesting killed the population of mussels that were the mainstay of Biwa pearl culture. History repeats itself because in the 1500's the Caribbean Sea and the Baja area of the Pacific were huge naturally producing pearl areas. These areas were stripped out by the Spanish search for resources.

Biwa pearls were known for their brownish purple colors with high luster. Biwa Pearls were nucleated as most freshwater pearls are today, that is with a piece of the soft mantle tissue that lines the shell. This technique is different than the way that saltwater pearls are nucleated, that is with a small round piece of mother of pearl. Soft tissue nucleating creates a pearl that is all nacre, much like a natural pearl.

The Japanese have taken to growing freshwater pearls in Lake Kasumigaura. They use a cross between the descendants of the remaining Biwa mussels and Chinese mussels. Some of the mussels from Lake Kasumigaura are actually nucleated with rejected akoya pearls.

They still do produce akoya pearls, Japan once the undisputed ruler of pearl culture has just about given up the culturing of pearls, freshwater and saltwater, because of pollution and rising costs.

They have become the distributor of much of China's pearl harvest of akoya pearls.

The Freshwater Jewelry Pearl

The Crown Jewels of England are freshwater pearls? Yes, supposedly from the rivers of Scotland. Do you still think they are low quality? Do you know that history says one of the reasons Julius Caesar invaded the British Isles for the freshwater jewelry pearls of Scotland. It is only since a short time ago that the freshwater pearl got a bad rap for being low quality.

Probably the biggest reason for this was when China burst into the cultured pearl market about 30 years ago. They really did burst into the market, and they produced tons of pearls. Most of the pearl farmers had no clue as to how to produce higher quality fresh water pearls. They just knew how to produce tons of low quality rice crispy pearls.

Since then China has made leaps and bounds in making their freshwater pearl be harvest better quality, to the point where the very best freshwater pearls are indistinguishable from high quality saltwater pearls. And the best part is their price is still well below saltwater pearls.

Physically the freshwater cultured pearl is different from the cultured saltwater pearl. The Saltwater pearl is cultured with a starter core of mother of pearl, made from freshwater pearl shell. The freshwater pearl is cultured from a starter of soft tissue that dissolves and that makes them solid pearl.

Today you can buy naturally colored white, peach and violet freshwater pearl jewelry. Enhanced black freshwater pearls are a beautiful exotic newcomer. Whatever color you buy you are going to pay less and get a good quality pearl, if you compare. Many stores including some of the high end department stores sell a lower grade of freshwater pearl necklace.

Tahitian Pearls Colors

Tahitian Pearls are black. Tahitian Pearls are green. Tahitian Pearls are aborigine. Tahitian Pearls are metallic. They are these colors and more. The one big reason why pearls can't be made by man is that it is darn near impossible to create the look of a real pearl. Real pearls are built up layer by layer; the multiple layers all create color and reflect color differently.

Pearls are not a reflective surface. Light penetrates into the pearl nacre and is alternately reflected out and back in, which is one reason why they seem to have an inner light.

Tahitian Black Pearls on first glance may look black .They are black with countless high light. These highlights pick up color and reflect color back, so within the black pearl you will see a rainbow of color. Tahitian cultured pearls range from the black body color, to a medium gray, and my favorite is the black Tahitian pearl that looks metallic.

If you picked a color that was even more representative of the Tahitian pearl color, it would be green. Tahitian pearls can run from a pistachio to a deep blue green, and in between there may be aqua with rose highlights. Tahitian pistachio pearl jewelry is chartreuse green, with an iridescence that can reflect reds and blues from within the green color.

Although I never use the word aborigine in any other context except Tahitian Pearl Color it means the deep purple of eggplant. With the purples come blues and blue highlights. Also with the purples come reds. And my favorites are the metallics, all themselves with highlights of reds and blues.

Since they are all natural colors they range all over within these descriptions.

The rainbow colors, of Tahitian Black Pearl Jewelry, are like nothing else.

Pearls Strand It Is Real

Want to know if you have got the real thing? Rub the strand across the front of your uppe teeth. It may sound strange, but real pearls will feel rough or gritty while fake ones will feel smooth.

This is due to the micropores found on the genuine article. Imitation pearls are usually made by dipping a glass or plastic bead into a solution of fish scales. The coating is generally fairly thin and will chip over time.

Check the pearls for tiny chips or flakes near the hole drilled through them. If you see chips, chances are your pearls are fake.

Try holding the pearls in your hand for a minute. Real pearls will feel cold initially, then will warm.

Real pearls can be either natural or cultured. Natural pearls are formed when a mollusk secretes a substance called nacre to coat an irritant that makes its way inside the animal's shell.

Cultured pearls are formed with a little human help -- an irritant is purposely introduced into the shell of the animal. You usually need an x-ray or an expert to distinguish between natural and cultured pearls.

Pearls differ from other gemstones in that they're not mined from rock, but rather harvested from mollusks, especially oysters. Clams and mussels have been known to produce pearls as well.

Basically, a pearl is produced when an irritant such as sand gets caught inside the oyster. To protect itself, the oyster secretes a substance akin to mucus. This substance builds up around the sand and hardens. The end result is a pearl.

Natural or South Sea pearls are those made by mollusks harvested from the ocean. Every now and then, one of the pearls will be a darker shade, either gray or black. These are rare, and as a result, very expensive.

As you can well imagine, it's a long, tedious practice to find oysters that have ingested a piece of sand to produce a pearl. The longer a pearl stays inside an oyster, the larger it becomes. Because of this, quality pearls are considered rare and cost a pretty penny.

Fortunately for those who favor this gem, there are now farms in which the irritant is eliberately injected into the mollusk to produce the pearl. These pearls are known as cultured.

When pearls are made without the benefit of a mollusk, they're considered man-made. Man-made pearls are made by using a bit of sand or shell along with a fish-based product called hermage to act as a substitute for the oyster's mucus. Other synthetic pearls include the "glass" pearl, a bead painted with hermage and left to dry and harden. These pearls have little or no value.

Freshwater pearls are produced by mussels. As their name indicates, these pearls are found in rivers and lakes rather than the ocean. Unlike the oyster, the mussel can produce many different pearls at once, sometimes as many as 40 or 50! These pearls come in various shapes and sizes.

Pearls are considered classic and elegant. They're the first choice for bridal jewelry and have a reputation of looking good with any outfit, even the most casual. They'll also add class and elegance to the most formal wardrobe.

If you're considering a purchase of pearls, it's best to do some research to find the type of pearl best suiting your needs and budget.

Remember, everyone looks good in pearls!

The Beauty of Fine Pearls

In today's world of advanced scientific techniques, it is not very difficult to find the beauty of those charming white or rose sea pearls. The beginning of the 20th century saw many inventions of the cultured pearls.

Nowadays many pearl cultivation centers have developed. Unlike the natural pearls which are hard to find, limited in number and usually varying qualities, shapes and sizes, these man made pearls are more accurate and flawless.

These are cultivated to be in perfect round shape; useful in jewelry making. This method of production helped to increase the number of pearls being produced, to tens of thousands in numbers rather than just a few pearls being found over a long period of time. The mass production has also been a facilitator in bringing down the cost of this gem to a price, which now a day suits the pockets of many.

Today the cultured pearl industry has took over the natural pearl harvesting industry with many different types of pearls being produced in different parts of the globe. These are harvested either from freshwater or saltwater mollusks. The common misconception is that saltwater pearls are known as cultured; where as the freshwater as well as saltwater pearls are produced with the same process.

The main producers of freshwater pearls are United States, Japan and China. Biwa is the most famous type of freshwater cultured pearl originator from the lake Biwa of Japan. The beauty of these freshwater pearls has been treasured in the minds of people, as they are rare, elegant, classic and royal. A person will always find freshwater pearls in the category of fashion and lifestyle. These can be afforded by a person and are more beautiful than other pearls.

There is a lot of difference between saltwater and freshwater pearls. Pearls which are originated from sea consist of deep color, while the freshwater pearls give a light gray or faded appearance.

Saltwater pearls are usually lustrous and round in shape compared with freshwater pearls, which makes saltwater pearls more expensive.

A pearl represents elegance, sophistication and beauty for all sorts of occasions or events regardless of its nature and type. At the time of buying pearls, a person should keep in mind all the six factors, which determine the quality and value of a single pearl i.e. shape, size, luster, color, surface texture, and nacre thickness.

Black Pearl Earring

If you’re looking for a black pearl earring set, there are some great places to get them. Looking online for black pearls will reveal a lot of search results. How do you know where to get your pearls? You want fair pricing and you want decent quality. Learning a bit about pearls can help you make a good choice when looking at pearls and pricing. A bit of online shopping savvy is also important.

Are you buying your set of black pearls for yourself or for someone else? When you buy them for someone, you probably have a price in mind that you are willing to spend. When you buy something for yourself, you tend to have a specific style in mind and then worry about pricing later. Natural pearls are much more expensive than cultured pearls so when you begin looking at a black pearl earring, you will see that pricing can vary significantly.

Pearls are graded based on several factors including the diameter of the pearl, the type of pearl, the lustre and the texture. Pearls are also valued based on their shape. You’ll find when you look at a pearl necklace that some pearls may look slightly different from one another. When a pearl necklace is graded it’s based on the entire string or strings of pearls whereas with an earring, if it’s a stud or single pearl earring it will be graded differently than if it were a pearl hoop.

How do you know if your pearls are real? There are faux pearl jewels that are simply painted plastic beads. Pearls are slightly heavier and can be a less then smooth if you rub them gently against your teeth. Pearls can last forever if they’re properly cared for.

When choosing an online supplier for your earrings, look first at someone who carries something that you like. Beyond that, you will want to look at pricing. Once you’ve narrowed your search down, it’s a good idea to look at the value added services they provide.

Is there an appraisal included from a certified gemologist? Is there a money back guarantee? Are there accessories or a box or pouch for your jewelry included? All these factors can help you find the best value for your money and the best pearls you can get.

Pearls can be varying shades of many colors including white, silver, pink, lavender, blue, green, black pearls and other colors. Many people who love pearls own multiple kinds of them. There are freshwater and saltwater options and there are natural pearls as well as cultured pearls.

Different oysters or mussels can produce different types of pearls and cultured pearls can be a bit of a science because there are some oysters and some processes that are more likely to put forth a specific type of pearl.

Whether you are buying pearls for yourself or as a gift for someone else, getting or giving a gorgeous set of earrings such as a black pearl earring can be a rewarding experience.

Freshwater Pearl & Mother of Pearl Jewelry

As freshwater pearls are solid nacre, they are also quite long-lasting, resisting chipping, wear, and degeneration. The Japanese have a distinguished history of culturing freshwater pearls as well.

Freshwater pearls cover the widest range of color and shape than any other pearl type. Originally these pearls were marketed as a lower quality, inexpensive alternative to akoya pearls. For this reason, they were typically used by jewelry designers for pieces that favored design over the gems themselves.

However, since the 1990s, a class of freshwater pearl that are round and shiny have emerged which competitor akoya pearls in both quality and value. Freshwater pearls cover the widest range of options for pearl buyers in size, shape and color. Besides Freshwater Pearls, Mother of Pearl is also very beautiful kind of pearl. It can help you with this part of your healing. It bestows the feeling that you are resting in the arms of a loving mother.

Mother of Pearl can help safeguard you from negative influences, like a protecting mother. When certain harmful frequencies enter your sensation, Mother of Pearl either scatters or absorbs them.

These include the frequencies of other people's negative thoughts and emotions and the harmful emissions of televisions, radios, and microwave transmitters. Although this is a side effect of its energy, it is a profound one and begins to take effect within minutes of donning a Mother of Pearl necklace.

Custom Anniversary Ring

There are different kinds of things that you can present to your beloved on her anniversary. However, the gift which will best commemorate your relationship with your wife, is an anniversary ring. It doesn't matter whether it is your first anniversary or fifth, you must give her something special, which will enhance your love for her even more.

Once you have decided to give her an anniversary ring, you can now move forward and design the ring that expresses your feelings towards her. All you have to do is picture the kind of ring you want and then go to any custom-made jewelry store. Tell them all your specifications and they will show you the whole range of metals, designs, shapes and colors for you to choose from.

Forget the old days, where you had to pick a ring from a narrow selection in a jewelry store mall. Moreover, if you had the misconception that a custom anniversary ring will be very costly, you will be amazed at the price. Custom jewelry is not as expensive as you think. While designing your custom anniversary ring, the first thing you have to do is to think about her likes and dislikes.

Next, think about her present jewelry - whether she likes to wear a channel setting or a prong setting or platinum or Gold, or some Princess cut or round stones? You must also pay attention to the details of her daily style of jewelry. Also try to notice, whether she likes designer or traditional styles. Then you have to think about the anniversary that you are commemorating, whether you have children, etc. You must also know about her birthstone, and find out whether she has a special liking for any color or stone.

There are certain custom-made rings, which have no stones in them; they have their own grandeur. These rings are made of only gold or platinum. Platinum is more costly than gold. You can design the initials of her name on the ring to create an added special effect. Finally, you can design the number of years of your anniversary on the anniversary ring, or you can create special engraving on the anniversary ring.

Now, you're ready to create a special ring for your wife, which will really astound her. After choosing the metal of the ring, style, and the type of the stones that you want, visit a jeweler with the expertise and background in CAD (Computer Aided Design) to custom design your ring. He can capture your ideas and prepare a CAD rendering for you to see before the item is made.

You will then have the opportunity to make modifications and changes in any way you want.If you give this kind of custom-made anniversary ring to your wife, she will be spellbound.

Pearl Strand Lengths

Pearl necklaces come in five basic lengths: Choker, Princess, Matinee, Opera and Rope. You may have heard of some of the names but probably have no idea how long each is and, more importantly, how it sits on the neck and below.

Choker - 16 in
The pearl choker is the shortest length circling the neck. While a pearl choker can be worn with almost any neckline and looks great with every style, from casual to formal, make sure it doesn't swallow the neck. Pearl chokers draw attention to the neck but if you have a particularly short or long neck, the attention should be drawn away from the neck to the shoulder line or below. As such, stay away from chokers. For everyone else, a choker is great classic, suitable for every occasion.

Princess - 18 in
A princess strand falls slightly below the neckline and compliments every neck-style from high to low. It's great for office-wear as its length sits just above a blouse neckline and won't be hidden like longer lengths.

Matinee - 24 in
The Matinee strand is most popular for formal occasions and is the perfect length for any little black dress event. It's also the best length for those who are well endowed in the chest region as it highlights the neck and shoulders finishing just above the cleavage.

Opera - 32 in
Falling just below the bust line, the Opera strand is great for evening wear and compliments every body shape. For less formal occasions, it can be doubled over and worn as a twin choker-a true day into night piece.

Rope - 46 in
If it's versatility you're after, then a pearl rope is the style for you. By itself the strand generally falls somewhere around the waistline and is perfect for those that like to stand out from the crowd. Its length means you can play with styles from triple, or quadruple rows of a choker, to doubling it as Princess and Opera style together. Or try simply knotting it for a chic look that's perfect with everything from jeans and a tee shirt to an elegant evening gown.

Care for Your Jewelry

With very simple techniques you can keep your diamonds fire and brilliance as the first day you bought them. The key to a diamond's magic is its sparkle and fire. Lotions, soap and natural skin oils however can reduce the brilliance of a diamond by leaving a film on the surface. It only takes a few minutes to clean a diamond.

Here are 3 cleaning methods:

1) Detergent Bath Place a mild liquid detergent in a small bowl of warm water. Then, brush the diamond with a small soft brush (a toothbrush will do) and rinse under running water.

2) Cold Water Soak Soak the jewelry for 30 minutes in a 50/50 solution of cold water and household ammonia. Remove and gently tap the front and back of the mounting with a small, soft brush. Dip the jewelry in the solution again and drain on tissue paper.

3) Quick Dip Method Use any brand name liquid jewelry cleaner and follow instructions on label. PROTECTING DIAMONDS Even when diamonds and precious jewelry are tucked away, they need special care. Jewelry should be kept in a fabric-lined jewel case or a box with compartments or dividers. If placed in one box, each piece should be wrapped in tissue paper, because a diamond can scratch and damage another diamond.

Though most women wear a diamond ring twenty-four hours a day, there are occasions when it should be removed. Do not wear a diamond ring while doing rough work. Although a diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a very hard blow.
