Avoid Fraudulent in the Jewelry Industry

Unfortunately the fact of the matter is that there are jewelers and dealers out there that engage in fraudulent practices when they are doing businesses from time to time. How can you spot them and just what are these fraudulent practices? The truth of the matter is that they are difficult to spot unless you are self trained to.

Most are masterful con artists who pick their targets carefully and will look you in the eye while they share a glass of wine and a joke with you, all the while plotting to to screw you over.

Fraudulent practices such as "stone switching" are surprisingly easy to pull of and once it is done, can be easily denied by the jeweler who will claim that it is you who is the con artist just looking for some easy money.

Even the most reputable jeweler can have an employee with a gambling or a drug problem, so it is up to you to cover your butt. Rule number one is that if you have expensive stones on your jewelry have then certified, documented and insured. Never just walk into just any jewelry store and hand expensive jewelry with nice stones in it over to the jeweler and assume that everything is OK.

Find a qualified jeweler and then don't be afraid to discuss the topic of stone switching with them and ask them what safeguards and guarantees they have in place to guarantee the you can't be victimized at their establishment.

A qualified reputable jeweler would be more then glad to discuss the topic and if you have expensive high grade stones in your jewelry would understand your concerns. Trying to save a few bucks by having your high end jewelry worked on by the jeweler at the local back alley pawn shop is the best way to end up becomming the victim of stone switching.

Earrings

When did earrings begin to be worn? Were they worn for body decoration, or other reasons? Some facts, folklore and irreverent comments about earrings:

Some authorities reason that earrings were first worn to help ward off evil spirits. It was thought that these spirits could enter the body through the ears. Ear piercing for the wearing of earrings goes back to evidence in carvings of ancient Persia, long before the existence of rock and roll bands or basketball players, of men wearing earrings.

There are still people that believe as the ancients did that to pierce the ears improves eyesight, especially if a gold earring is worn in one ear and a silver one in the other. Others say to wear earrings of gold with emeralds in them does the trick. It may be a lot less painful and confusing (and less expensive) in the long run to just get a pair of glasses.

There was the thought long ago that wearing jewelry of any type was showing the wearer to be
influenced by demons. Evidently these same folks didn't know about the first bullet point of this
list.

During the days of sailing ships, a sailor would wear an earring to show he had survived a shipwreck, that he had crossed the equator or sailed around the world. Pick the reason you like.
Or maybe they wore them just because they liked them. A good enough reason in itself.

During the Women's Suffrage movement of the early 20th century, the piercing of women's ears was looked upon as barbaric. An alternative method of screw-on earrings was invented as a result. In the 1930's an improvement upon the screw-on type was the clip-on earring. These types of earrings were the style until the 1960's when the barbarity of piercing ears came back into vogue.

There have been times in history where earrings practically disappeared because of hair styles
and clothing fads. The middle of the 19th century was one of these times. It wasn't until Queen
Victoria of England, ever the trend-setter, took to wearing earrings that they came back into
vogue.

The most expensive earrings made to date were made by Harry Winston, 'Jeweler To the Stars' in Beverly Hills, California. In 2006 a pair of Diamond Drop earrings were produced by The House of Winston that had each earring consisting of two pear-shaped diamonds set in a platinum setting. Total weight of the diamonds is 60.1 carats. If you wanted to buy them you'd have to cough up (gasp) $8.5 million. By Alan Beggerow

If you looking for affordable value of earrings, there are many in the market, either jewelry shopping web site or retails jewelry shop. All depend what type of earring you are looking at? pearl earrings, gold, diamond earrings etc.

Choosing Pearl Earrings

Earrings are a popular piece of jewelry and it is essential to choose the right styles for your face shape. Wearing the right earrings will help to flatter and define your features.

To determine your face shape, start by pulling your hair away from your forehead with a hair band, stand in front of a mirror and trace the outline of your face with a soap bar or lipstick onto the mirror.

Check your face shape against those listed below. Each one is outlined with their best suit defining features and avoid example to help you work out which shape you belong to. If you’re having difficulty working out which face shape you have, just ask a friend for some help.

Oval Face
Best Suit: Soft shapes such as pearls, teardrops, ovals and studs work the best. Oval faces are very versatile and can wear pretty much anything. Just experiment with all styles to see which ones you prefer.

Round Face
Best Suit: Long, lean and angular curvy lines to elongate the round face. Drop earrings in oblongs, ovals and dangles work best. Bold angular stud earrings can also look great.
Avoid: Large, chunky earrings. And steer clear of hoops and small studs.

Heart Shaped Face
Best Suit: Earrings that are wider at the bottom than at the top. Go for earrings with soft curves such as tear drops or ovals. Pyramid style earrings can also work well as they are wider at the bottom.
Avoid: Heart shaped earrings and those that come to a point at the bottom.

Square Face
Best Suit: Angular, rounded edges which will soften a square face. Medium to long styles are best and hoops look amazing.
Avoid: Large, angular styles as these can make your face appear wider.

Oblong Face
Best Suit: Statement chandelier styles with lots of volume. Simple studs also work well as they draw the eyes horizontally.
Avoid: Long and angular earrings that mirror your face shape.

Diamond Face
Best Suit: Earrings with more width than length, a combination of straight lines and curves are great. Studs also look good on diamond shape faces as do small drops.
Avoid: Diamond shape earrings and angular squares.

Remember to match the style and colour of your earrings to your outfit and to the occasion. Be comfortable in what you wear and your elegance will shine through. By Anna Lee

Pearl Jewelry

From Audrey Hepburn and the English Crown Jewels to long necklaces done by fashion giant Chanel, there is absolutely no doubt to the timelessness of a great pearl jewelry. Pearls are a wonder of nature, like most jewels are. Born from an irritation in the inner lining of mollusks (oysters and pearl mussels create pearls that are considered valuable); it becomes something beautiful and spectacular.

There are different kinds of pearls , they come in different shapes, sizes and colors. The rounder the pearl is the rarer and much more expensive it tends to be. Pearls are either salt water or fresh water pearls , cultured or natural. The environment of which the pearl is created greatly contributes to how a pearl will turn out.

STORAGE - Pearl jewelry cannot be haphazardly thrown in with the other jewelry in your armoire. Pearls have a softer surface compared to other jewelry. In fact, pearls are located in the lowest rung when it comes to hardness with diamonds being at the top. So, if you throw your pearls with other jewelry that contains sapphires, rubies, emeralds, etc. or even gold links that have sharp edges on them, you are endangering your pearls from getting scratched or damaged.

The best thing to do is to put the pearls in a separate container. If you do not have the luxury, the time or the space to store your jewels separately, then you could get inexpensive felt or velvet pouches that you can buy in craft and fabric stores. Keep your pearls in these pouches so that they do not get scratched by harder gemstones.

CLEANING - There are a lot of jewelry cleaners that are available in the market. DON'T use them with your pearls. Again, as said, pearls have a softer cover in comparison to other gems. Commercial jewelry cleaners can damage the surface of your pearls and cause them to loose their luster. When you need to clean your pearls , the best thing to do is to clean them with a dilute solution of soap and water. This will help remove the dirt and still keep your pearls intact.

For better results, use warm water when cleaning them and soak them for at least 10 minutes. Don't leave them on too long because it can also damage the pearl and make it loose its luster. Another tip that will keep the pearl clean and help it keep its shine longer is to put on your perfume first before putting on the pearl. This way, you do not get any of the oil and the alcohol from the perfume directly on the pearls .

MAKING THEM LAST - Pearls need to be restrung at least every year or when the string they are attached to becomes frayed. Re-stringing pearls help avoid a fiasco of having your pearls rain down all over your floor with you getting on your knees looking for each individual piece. Restringing can be done by a professional; your local jeweler can probably do the job for
you. By Puripong Koomsin

Freshwater Pearl Necklace - Ideal Gift

A freshwater pearl necklace is a beautiful, meaningful, and thoughtful gift that you can give to the most special woman in your life. Whether it’s your wife, mother, or sister, she will surely appreciate having a freshwater pearl necklace from you.

Freshwater pearls have been cultivated, cultured, or found in freshwater as opposed to saltwater pearls which have been harvested from seas and oceans. Freshwater pearls can be naturally processed with or without human intervention.

Without human interference, pearl divers will have to search for mollusks or oysters where a foreign object has incidentally found its way inside and has been encrusted with layers of nacre, the ingredient mainly responsible for the unique luster of pearls.

With human intervention, pearl divers will insert organ tissue material into another mollusk to generate nacre production. They will also carefully monitor all factors that could affect the growth of pearls to ensure that the end product will come out beautiful and evenly shaped.

How to Choose the Perfect Freshwater Pearl Necklace

Source – Freshwater pearls are produced in various parts of the world although the most famous come from Japan and China. The origin of freshwater pearl necklace can readily affect its price so consider purchasing freshwater pearl necklaces from less-known pearl manufacturers if you’re on a budget.

Size – Just like it is with all sorts of jewelry, the larger the size of the gem – or pearl, in this instance – the higher its value. The pearl size greater than 5mm the value is double.

Shape – There are numerous pearls that are irregularly shaped because they have been allowed to grow without any external interference. It’s also more likely for saltwater mollusks to produce evenly shaped pearls than freshwater mollusks. If you’re after perfect and evenly shaped freshwater pearls, consider purchasing freshwater cultivated pearls.

Luster – Observe freshwater pearl necklaces in various lights to effectively compare its luster. Of course, the better the luster of freshwater pearls, the higher its value once more.

Skin – Just like any other gem, you should also consider the quality of the freshwater pearl necklace. Does it have any visible blemishes, scratches, or flaws? Since freshwater pearls are sensitive to damage, you might have a hard time looking for one that’s completely free from blemish.

Color – Lastly, consider the color and make sure that it complements the complexion of the recipient.

Perfect Necklace Size & Style

Necklaces come in many different styles and sizes. One reason for this is because women love versatility. They love different looks for different occasions and even for their different moods. One necklace could never handle every look and every mood a woman has or wants. So how do you go about finding the perfect style and size necklace? You just pick a certain look and a certain mood. Then you find the onethat will match.

Start by looking at what length you want. The most popular length is the 18 inched. But some women like shorter lengths (the 16th inch is still popular) and will even pair a shorter length necklace with a longer one. If you are stuck wondering what length you should buy, you could buy a necklace that has an extension chain. These extension chains allow the woman to set the length according to her own taste and she can change that length each time she wears it, if she wishes.

Now think about what type of chain you might want to buy, you can buy anything from a costume type chain, a nickel free chain, a hypoallergenic chain (yes there is a difference between hypoallergenic and nickel free), a pure gold chain, a gold covered overlay chain, a sterling silver chain to name a few types.

Of course, you can even buy necklaces that are not chains. Some are made from pearls, fake pearls, beads, shells, ribbons, leather and even string. If you are getting confused at what type of necklace you should buy, you haven't heard anything yet. Have you stopped to think about the charm that should be dangling from the necklace?

You can find about any type of charm you want. Some of the most popular ones are: crosses, hearts, flowers, circles, circles within circles, stars, moons, peace signs, bears, cats, angels, unicorns, angels, etc.

Then, of course, you can't forget the beautiful and somewhat expensive gemstones that hang so elegantly from necklaces. There is the universal diamond, the ruby, the topaz, the emerald, the jade, etc. Plus, there are the costume versions of the beautiful gems.

Here are some questions that might help you, if you want to buy a necklace as a gift, first think about the person who you will be receiving the necklace. Do you remember seeing her in necklaces? Can you remember what lengths she generally wears? Does she prefer gold or silver chains or maybe she is a pearl lady. Does she love crosses? Does she collect angels or bears?

Does she have a passion for the night sky? The answers to these questions can lead you on the way toward that perfect necklace. By Jeffrey Meier

Jewelry As What You Wear

Jewelry not only enhances our wardrobe, but it allows us to make a statement to the world of how we would like people to perceive us. Not only that, but wearing jewelry is fun. It makes us feel good about ourselves. For those times when you just don’t know which jewelry to wear or to buy, here are few ways to help you decide.

What Jewelry Should You Wear?

If you can’t decide what jewelry to wear, then you can let the occasion be your guide.

Job Interview

During a job interview, wearing jewelry is optional. If you do wear jewelry, make sure you wear what is appropriate. For example, if you want to make a good impression for a job interview at a bank, then you should be conservative in your dress and selection of jewelry. At work, wear something that is appropriate for your position.

In The Evenings

Dinner parties can be exciting when you get to show off your sparkling jewelry. You’ll get people noticing and perhaps break the ice with people whom you’ve just met. Of course, you should let them make the compliments first, or you might appear to be obnoxious.

Holiday Themes

For festive times, you can wear holiday themed jewelry, such as Christmas or even Halloween. They have the colors, shapes and objects normally associated with the holiday. You shouldn't wear these after the holiday they are about or people might wonder about you.

Getting Married

Wearing bridal jewelry would be appropriate for the day you get married. The wedding band and the wedding ring are partly the responsibility of the groom. However, these days the bride is also involved in the shopping decision. So, if the budget allows it, a one carat diamond ring would be very flattering on you.

Going Back In Time

Wearing antique jewelry could be a way of changing the mood. You might have a piece that is are and valuable. Antique jewelry is distinctive and wearing it might make you feel that you're
living in a previous time. By Wanda Lam

Pearl Jewelry The Nature's Jewelry

Decades ago, pearls were thought of as a rare and delicate, used only as an accessory for very special occasions, such as weddings or funerals. Today, pearls have been found in
many different colors and shapes, ranging in their opalescence and virility. In this generation, pearls are worn daily, in different designs, colors and shapes. Pearls are no longer
limited to being considered the finishing touch to a simple funeral dress or wedding gown.

Other colors of pearls have become more popular as researchers have found that the natural colors of pearls can be altered in the growing process by gradually changing the color of
the shell that houses the pearl. In current day jewelry, natural, freshwater pearls are now available in bold colors, such as cranberry, mauve, deep blue, iridescent purple, and bronze.

Pearls are fast becoming a popular form of accessorizing, and BePearls has keep up with the trends as what you need!
