Take Care of Your Pearls

Real pearls are organic items and as such require special consideration when caring for them. They have a fabulous lustre that is an essential part of why women love to wear them. So it would be a terrible shame if this was lost or damage simply by not following some very simple rules.

You must protect your pearls from everyday chemicals found in cosmetics. Always apply your creams, make-up, hair spray and perfume before putting on your pearls. Try hard not to spray perfume on the exact area that your pearls will sit as this prolonged contact can damage the pearls' surface. Also if you need to reapply hair spray or make-up always remove your pearls first and put them out of the way of loose spray.

Again, always remove your pearls at the end of the day before you start to remove your make-up or apply creams. If you do accidentally get something adverse on them simply wipe them over with a soft damp cloth - NO soap or detergent.

Never put your pearls on top of fires or televisions as the heat can discolour the surface. Store them in the box they came in - never just throw them in to a jewellery box with other items as they will get tangled causing damage to the clasp and may cause chipping of the surface. If they do not have a box try to keep them in a silk bag.

To keep the luminous lustre occasionally buff up with a silk scarf. If you wear your pearls most days they will last longer if you have them restrung each year. If you are a less frequent wearer then every two years will be fine.

These simple rules will help to maintain your pearls' beautiful lustre and enable you to continue to enjoy wearing them for a long time. By Eric Hartwell
